21 September 2013 marked the launch of the Kara Heritage School in Pretoria, a unique new institution dedicated to the study of African cultural history and traditions. The events of the day included traditional cultural celebrations, attended by traditional leaders, members of African traditional communities and dignitaries from government and civil society.
A Memorandum of Understanding between the Department of Arts and Culture and the Kara Heritage Institute laid the foundation for the Kara Heritage School. Here, at the school’s beautiful new thatched complex of classrooms and training rooms, students from all walks of life will be participating in Seta accredited studies of African history, culture, religions and heritage. The practical skills of heritage practice and heritage tourism will also be taught, as well as crafts production.
With a view to empowering the youth with foundation skills, the school will also teach enrichment programmes to Grades 9 -12 learners in the subjects of maths and science, accounting and entrepreneurship.
Civic education programmes will also be introduced. Dr Mathole Motshekga, the Director of the Kara Heritage School, said that it was
vital for all South Africans to become active citizens, committed to taking their country forward.
“Our forebears brought us to where we are now. Now we need to build a new generation of young people who can stand on the shoulders of their predecessors and take Africa further into the future,” said Motshekga.
The Kara Heritage School is located at the premises of the Kara Heritage Institute, at No.65, Cnr Kgosi Mampuru and Madiba Streets, Pretoria. For more information, contact admin@kara.co.za or call 012 323 7737.
